"Assassination of Obama and Clinton"

An ichat conversation i had with a friend earlier today went like this:
"start"
E---Aaza
Aaza---Hi E....
E---Did u see that racist art exhibition "the assassination of Barack and Hillary"? On 40th St. Near the time Square bldg
Aaza---is it racist?
E---Http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/04police-shut-down-assassination-art-exhibition/
Aaza---i know the work
E---so obviously you don't see it as racially offensive
Aaza---how do you see it as racially offensive?
E---I don't know uhhh... A photo of Barack and his daughters entitled nappy headed hoes... Go figure
Aaza---hmmm... was that all you saw?
E---That and the other photos on display
Aaza---how was this work brought to your attention? in context
E---Ok well what context should I have seen it in?
Aaza---did you approach this work from the artist's perspective or from the media's perspective?
the first time you heard about it, was the information you received was that its racially offensive art work?
E---I just looked at the art work and was offended.
Aaza---was that i???? you just looked??
E---Should I have listened to the art work?
Aaza---think about this.... someone gave you a picture of a man holding a knife in one hand and a dead woman in the other? Does he go to jail just based off of the picture
E---I mean excuse me for not being sophisicated??/
Aaza---its not about sophisticated... maybe its about leaving becoming aware of our emotions and how it affects our reality
so was that it?? you just looked at the images?
E---Emotions are apart of our reality. There is no reality without them. Unless you're a robot.
I don't say decisions should made solely on emotions but emotions go into every decision no matter how intellectual
Aaza---of course it is a part of our reality.... the point is HOW it affects our reality
E---Yes it does and I'm sure this artist desired the emotional effect.
Aaza---of course he did ...so.... what the artwork in context?
what is the artwork about in context?
E---So there it is..... It's racially offensive... Art is left to the viewers interpretation.
Aaza---why not misogynistic??
E---I didn't see the Hillary photos, I just seen the Barack pieces.
Aaza---oh really??? why is that?
E---But racist and misogynistic..Still racist
Aaza---ok..... so what is the artwork in context?
EIn context of a Black Man and White Woman running for president.
Aaza---good
E---Good?
E---Do I get a cookie
Aaza---what was the media's main focus on this democratic election??
E---Ok, you're taking me for a ride here with these questions. Just tell me you're view of the exhibit.
Aaza---and actually its a Black Man and a Woman(not white) running for president
i'm not taking you on a ride... i just want you to figure it out on your own.... the artwork in context... without the media's perspective that play on your emotions
E---No matter how you slice it, it's racially offensive and misogynistic. I don't care what kind of justification someone puts behind that. If it's not clear within the presentation then the average person will take it as is.
Aaza--"If it's not clear within the presentation then the average person will take it as is." that is exactly what the media thinks of people. how was it presented?? to you?
E---If you and your daughter had that caption under your name your family and friends -who love you- won't care anything about the artist interpretation.
Aaza---how was it presented?? to you?
E---It was presentated as a photo. As is
Aaza---so "God" is white?
E---To most whites and whole lot of negroes... Yes
Aaza---why is that?
E---That's who they worship.
Aaza---they visually see "God" as being white because that is the image they have been given throughout history by the church(media) and most don't take upon themselves to see that there is a problem with that and do their own search
and some don't care to because they want to accept it...as is
E---And perception is reality. The person who rules is the person who has the power to force his reality on others.
Aaza---to whites they accept it because it makes them feel superior
E---And negroes accept it because they have been subdued by him
Aaza---yup
"The person who rules is the person who has the power to force his reality on others".... who is ruling your perception of this artwork?
E---So perception is reality. It is what it is... A racially offensive and misogynistic piece of art
Me and my experiences as a Black Man in America. That's my reality.
Aaza---and knowing this.... how has the media played on your emotions with that fact?
E---First of all, I am not highly emotional towards the artwork. I am really not surprised by racism anymore. It is what it is... I am actually acknowledging the racism as I would acknowledge that you're cute.
Aaza---don't lie to yourself E.... you are emotionally affected by this... whether you acknowledge it or not
E---U think I'm over here fuming and ready to march with Sharpton. Nah... I'm more like oh check this bold dude out.
Aaza---I mean, visually, hell yeah ... i agree them pics are crazy
bold indeed
E---Trust me Aaza when u have experienced as much racism and death as I have in my short life, you get to the point where it's like "oh well". It loses it's sting after a while.
Aaza---i understand.... but know that just based off of your experiences, you have formulated your opinion of this work only from the images you saw and felt no need to look into the work...think about in NYC.... AN ARTIST THAT FUCKING CRAZY TO DO SOME RACIST SHIT LIKE THAT??
do you really think its racist?
E---Firstly, most artist are crazy. Yes it is racist. No matter what the intention.
If a man rubbed your ass with the intention of making you feel good but you felt harassed, do really give half a flying f--- about his intentions. The same with this artwork it's offensive regardless of the intent
Aaza---well... i guess that's your reality
E---No that's reality. If you are offended by something, then you just are... No rationale can tell you not to be.
Aaza---i'm not offended... so ... your reality is not mine
E---Never said it was... I'm speaking in general..
However, your reality -perception- allows you to look at it as simply art. That's how you trained your mind
Aaza---My reality tells me that art is not only what you see...just like when i look at african art work that have what some would consider grotesque sculptures.... it is not really about what you see visually...it's the context
E---Right, you have an appreciation for art, I do too. It's a form expression, even when a person is expressing their hatred of a thing.
E---Talk 2 u later girlfriend
Peace
Aaza---peace
