"My Home"
My uncle built a house on a piece of land he owns out in the country side. He has three cows, a few goats and chickens roaming about. At night the crickets sing, the cows harmonize along, and the rooster sings his song in the morning. I stayed at my uncles, equipped with a solar panel(you go uncle) and thought, this is something that i would love to have in the near future. A place to go to, away from the city, away from the madness that can grab you whole.....a place i can rest and go within and live within.... I would love to own a piece of land back home, where my uncle has his, where i took my first breath, back home.... Back in Haiti.
I was away for a few weeks in Haiti with my daughter. It was her first trip to Haiti. It was the first time she met her grandfather... It was the first time she stepped out of the comfort zone of her privileged life here in the states and it was a total culture shock and a life experience for her as she got to see what life can be like in other parts of the world...
The first night in Haiti, i would have to say was magical. It was days before Fay hit, and then Gustav, and then Hanna....and then Ike, and left Haiti in a much worst state then it was already in. At the moment, i digress.... for another blog.....But, it was surely windy that first night. Nunet said she could smell the rain coming and she was right. That night, in my dads backyard, in the dark(there was no electricity that night) there was lighting. It was our only source of light. It had been dreadfully hot earlier, but that breeze was truly something soothing. My father, daughter and i sat in the back allowing the breeze to caress. And then it happened. We heard rain drops against the trees and the pavement. Nunet and i ran into the rain and my father, my crazy father, took off all of his clothes except his briefs and jumped in the small pool that he has in his backyard. So there we were in the pouring rain, in the dark, under lighting and my father screaming at us to jump in the pool... We could not help but to join him! And it was magical!
We visited my mother's home town, which is up in the mountains. A beautiful place to visit. On our way there, we drove up a steep mountain that had a very narrow, unending curvy road. Nunet cried the whole trip up. As i held her to comfort her, I thought, shit, no one is comforting me...LOL..... It was the first time that i had ever been so high on ground. The car drove on the edge of the road. I held Nunet tight and looked at the passerby's, the locals, who were probably wondering what the hell was wrong with us. Children, probably from ages 4 and up were skipping along the road without a care and i thought, wow....to have this view, as it was an amazing view, and to be fearless at such a young age, definitely develops the mind of an in-touch and strong individual.
We got to visit the Citadel which was even higher than my mothers hometown.... we actually had to ride a mule to go up the castle.... and of course Nunet cried the whole way up saying, "I want to go home"..... When we got to the castle she stayed very close to the walls as i looked at the view and looked below us and saw nothing but clouds...How beautiful! The palace below was also another amazing site. It baffles me that these magnificent structures are not in history books for its relevance as well as art books for its architectural design!!! Nunet finally relaxed when we entered the citadel and enjoyed the rest of the trip, though we walked back down. LOL
Port-au-Prince, the city where my father lives is a mess.... everyone is on top of one another... the pavements are falling apart.... and there are so many business people, men, women and children selling whatever it is that they have, from 5 in the morning till 9 or 10 at night. In Haiti, the government takes the electricity away throughout the day.... They would provide electricity for anywhere from an hour to 15 minutes and then leave us in the dark and in the heat for hours. This was something that Nunet was not accustomed to as she is a digital child and not being able to log on to the computer was frustrating. But she did enjoy herself at my fathers summer camp. She got to hang out with the kids who do not speak English, and she speaks no creole, but they spoke friendship which was so beautiful!!!!
Whether Nunet loved the stay in Haiti or not, i am certain that this trip will stay with her... and this makes me happy. I am also happy that i got to reconnect with my dad. We spoke about a lot of things from my past relationship as well as my present to Voodou and its relationship with quantum physics! I am very happy that I a different perspective on the life road that i am on from someone i feel has traveled a similar path!
